Camera Cages
A camera cage is a form fitting metal frame that surrounds your camera as a layer of protection in case of falls or bumps. Most camera cages also feature a number of 1/4-20 and 3/8-16 threaded holes for mounting other components to your “rig”.
As a YouTuber, it’s helpful to attach accessories to your cameras like external microphones, external monitors, wireless hdmi transmitters, external power sources or even a few handles that help you control your rig throughout each shot.
Monitor Mounts
One of the single most popular add-ons for a YouTuber would be an external monitor. Particularly if your camera doesn’t have a flip around screen for you to see yourself when filming solo. But even if you have a flip around screen, they are often less than 2" in size which makes adding a 5" or larger external monitor a popular add-on.
SmallRig makes a number of monitor mounts that work with their other camera cages and handles to support an external monitor and offer some adjustability for angle and position.
Camera Handles
Another popular accessory YouTuber’s add to their cameras would be some kind of handle whether a central top handle or a side grip handle.
The central top handles allow you to drop the camera down low, below your waistline, for some unique shots popular with urban city shots and some sports.
The side handles are a popular addition to larger camera rigs. When your camera rig starts to grow in weight due to the number of accessories you have mounted up, a two hand grip can help control the camera for smooth shots.
